Until recently, producing unique codes was complex and costly because each item had to be known in advance and produced individually. This often conflicted with the minimum batch sizes of weaving machines, making it impossible for many brands.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"824\" data-end=\"1216\">The breakthrough: mass production with on-demand linking. Thanks to the introduction of serialized GTIN, this problem is now solved. It is now possible to produce large quantities of unique QR codes at once, without pre-defining the item details. These unique codes can later be seamlessly linked to the correct product information, giving each item a complete <strong data-start=\"1185\" data-end=\"1213\">digital product identity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1218\" data-end=\"1418\">In this blog, we explain how this innovation not only creates enormous efficiency gains in production but also opens the door to full traceability and new commercial opportunities at the item level.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"s8gqj0\" data-start=\"1425\" data-end=\"1445\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"1429\" data-end=\"1445\">What is GS1?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1447\" data-end=\"1843\">GS1 develops global standards so companies can uniquely identify, share, and track products across the supply chain. This is mostly done using the well-known GTIN code (EAN). This code contains information such as country, company, product (e.g., size or color), etc. While effective, one major limitation remained: identification was possible only at the batch level, not for individual items.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1845\" data-end=\"1927\">This limitation meant that brands missed out on valuable data at the item level:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1929\" data-end=\"1961\"><strong data-start=\"1929\" data-end=\"1959\">No individual traceability<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1962\" data-end=\"2054\">\n<li data-section-id=\"m8291j\" data-start=\"1962\" data-end=\"2002\">No link between product and customer<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"j1p5ne\" data-start=\"2003\" data-end=\"2054\">No insight into behavior per individual product<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2056\" data-end=\"2089\"><strong data-start=\"2056\" data-end=\"2087\">No product history per item<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2180\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1k8f4lc\" data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2134\">No insight into usage, wear, or lifespan<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1esd7cg\" data-start=\"2135\" data-end=\"2180\">No data on repairs, returns, or recycling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2182\" data-end=\"2245\"><strong data-start=\"2182\" data-end=\"2243\">Limited customer interaction and commercial opportunities<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2246\" data-end=\"2338\">\n<li data-section-id=\"zsufx4\" data-start=\"2246\" data-end=\"2282\">No personalized content per item<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"bls11u\" data-start=\"2283\" data-end=\"2338\">Fewer opportunities for upselling and cross-selling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"3cssty\" data-start=\"2345\" data-end=\"2374\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"2349\" data-end=\"2374\">Why this is a problem<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2376\" data-end=\"2539\">Data is today one of a brand\u2019s most valuable assets. Working only at batch level provides only general insights, whereas real insights come from item-level data.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2541\" data-end=\"2819\">This was also a practical problem for unique woven QR codes. Each code had to be produced individually, while weaving machines have a minimum batch size of approximately 2,500 pieces. In practice, quantities per item are often much lower, making it unfeasible for many brands.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2821\" data-end=\"2917\">The absence of a clear <strong data-start=\"2844\" data-end=\"2872\">digital product identity<\/strong> per item further complicated this process.<\/p>\n<h4 data-section-id=\"851oue\" data-start=\"2924\" data-end=\"2990\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"2928\" data-end=\"2990\">The Solution: Serialized GTIN for Digital Product Identity<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2992\" data-end=\"3078\">GS1 solved this by adding a serial number to the GTIN, known as <strong data-start=\"3056\" data-end=\"3075\">serialized GTIN<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3080\" data-end=\"3103\"><strong data-start=\"3080\" data-end=\"3101\">How does it work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"3104\" data-end=\"3279\">\n<li data-section-id=\"10cnr3v\" data-start=\"3104\" data-end=\"3142\">Start with an existing GTIN (EAN)<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"186h3rj\" data-start=\"3143\" data-end=\"3206\">Add a unique serial number (e.g., 0000000001, 0000000002\u2026)<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1egfii5\" data-start=\"3207\" data-end=\"3279\">This combination is converted into a unique 24-character code (EPC)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3281\" data-end=\"3345\">\n<p data-start=\"3283\" data-end=\"3345\">Example:<br data-start=\"3291\" data-end=\"3294\" \/>GTIN + serial number \u2192 302593D1ED6F80803B9ACA00<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"3347\" data-end=\"3425\">Each following code counts automatically, allowing millions of unique codes.<\/p>\n<h5 data-section-id=\"481gj2\" data-start=\"3432\" data-end=\"3456\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"3436\" data-end=\"3456\">Why this matters<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p data-start=\"3458\" data-end=\"3536\">The big advantage: no more pre-producing stacks of labels per product group.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3538\" data-end=\"3557\">Instead, you can:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3558\" data-end=\"3676\">\n<li data-section-id=\"7pj80b\" data-start=\"3558\" data-end=\"3606\">Produce, for example, 100,000 labels at once<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"cpce7a\" data-start=\"3607\" data-end=\"3676\">Link a unique code per item later in the process (via QR or RFID)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3678\" data-end=\"3706\">This makes it possible to:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3707\" data-end=\"3857\">\n<li data-section-id=\"46ln2\" data-start=\"3707\" data-end=\"3765\">Give each product
